Given that there is a wealth of JDBC code out there, I suspect that many developers may try to leverage their investment as they build new rich internet applications with JavaFX. I'll be using NetBeans 6.5 to demonstrate a simple example.

JavaFX asynchronous communication with JSON and REST based web services

While writing Rich Internet Application with JavaFX is relatively easy and well documented, fetching data from remote sources seemed more obscure to me. The documentation is minimal and I did not found any good tutorial describing the various techniques available to connect to a remote web service and how to parse the results.

Skinning a scroll bar - Part 3

In part one we looked at the ScrollBarOrientation class, where we saw how abstracting away the actual scrolling dimension would help remove code redundancy. In part two we looked at the actual ScrollBarSkin interface and a sample implementation where we saw how a scroll bar could be layed out and painted.

Easter Eggs

What does a real fan love? A real fan loves it when they can find (and share) an Easter Egg. An Easter Egg is a hidden message or inside joke usually found in movies, books, CDs, video games, websites, etc… created by the producer of the content. The consumer either knows where it is, how to uncover it or the precise time where you can spot it. Yes, the entirety of the program can be enjoyed without it, but for those who are really into it, it's the secret handshake and that little extra something to surprise and delight. From Wikipedia… "The term draws a parallel with the custom of the Easter egg hunt observed in many Western nations, but actually is derived by the practice of the last Russian imperial family's tradition of giving elaborately jeweled egg-shaped creations by Fabergé which usually contained hidden gifts themselves… This practice is similar in some respects to hidden signature motifs such as Diego Rivera including himself in his murals, Alfred Hitchcock's legendary cameo appearances, and various 'Hidden Mickeys' that can be found throughout Disneyland." Have you ever watched kids during an Easter Egg hunt? Have you ever been with someone who said something like, "yeah, I know this movie is cool, but did you ever notice THIS!" The craziest part is just how easy it is to add that little extra something into everything you do. It doesn't have to be something costly or extravagant. In fact, those who have developed some of the best Easter Eggs would probably argue that it's the simple and little things that really got the most attention and appreciation. If you have no idea how to develop that kind of culture within your business or marketing department, you should check out these two books: Pow! Right Between the Eyes - Profiting from the Power of Surprise by Andy Nulman. Made to Stick - Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die by Chip Heath and Dan Heath. Nulman will walk you through the importance of putting the element of surprise into all of your business and marketing initiatives, while the Heath brothers have brilliantly constructed a book about how to tell stories, how to make them spread and – most importantly – why great stories grow a business. Why don't Marketers spend more time putting Easter Eggs into everything they do? What is the real extra effort or cost in doing this? Playing Accordion With CSS and jQuery

One of the problems web designers face on a daily basis is the limits that are placed on one with regards to the size of your 'canvas'. Bigger screens with higher resolutions has helped a great deal in this regard but the problem definitely has not disappeared. Offshoring Development Finally Makes Sense to Me

Note: This is not an elitist rant. It used to be that I would go off into a blistering rant whenever I heard anyone talking about offshore development. The mere idea that a group of people half way around the world could not only do a better job than me, but do it cheaper, was sheer nonsense. Not only that, I found the idea offensive, repulsive, repugnant, disgusting, and really just plain obtuse. Not so much anymore.

JavaLobby Web Framework Comparison Guide: A Call To Arms

Over the next few months here at JavaLobby and Web Builder Zone, we plan to provide the most comprehensive guide to the Java Web Frameworks available. The idea for this came about when I, a desktop developer, decided that I wanted to write a web application using one of the Java-based web frameworks. It became apparent that we have a lot of choice (maybe too much!) and that there is no single source of comparison for these frameworks.

Grails, Django and Web2Py - the search for perfection is difficult

If you are like me, you don't bother with framework's speed too much because you are developing applications for small groups of users. If you are not creating the apps for masses(and frankly, most developers don't) then you are probably struggling different things than just the speed. My primary concern, when evaluating the web frameworks, is how it can help me in developing apps for my many small clients. I'm not developing one or two big applications, but many small (maybe 30-40 different) for not one client but many different clients(companies) . Typical scenario for the client are the many apps that are developed within a few years. The applications must talk to each other in some way, must share common data and must be maintainable easily.
